Blue and purple Coraline cinnamon rolls with thick vanilla frosting and star sprinkles

A Coraline-inspired bake: two-tone blue and purple dough rolled around a brown sugar, cinnamon and crushed Oreo filling, then finished with thick vanilla frosting and star sprinkles. It is a yeasted dough, so most of the work is waiting, and the food colouring is what makes the swirl worth the effort.

1 pan (about 8 rolls)

Method

  1. 1

Mix the warm milk, sugar, butter and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, until it looks foamy on top.

  2. 2

Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Knead, cover and let it rise until doubled.

  3. 3

Add the remaining ½ cup flour and knead until smooth. Divide the dough and colour one half blue and one half purple.

  4. 4

Roll out the dough, spread with softened butter, then sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon and crushed Oreos. Add blue and purple coloring to the filling. Roll it up, cut into rolls and place them in a greased pan.

  5. 5

Let the rolls rise again until puffy.

  6. 6

Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 22 to 27 minutes. Let cool slightly.

  7. 7

For the frosting, beat the butter until fluffy. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, salt and milk and beat until thick and smooth. Divide and color blue and purple.

  8. 8

Frost the cinnamon rolls and decorate with star sprinkles.

Baker’s notes

  • Use gel food coloring, not liquid drops. Gel gives the deep blue and purple swirl without thinning the dough.
  • The second rise is what makes the rolls fluffy. Wait until they are visibly puffy before they go in the oven.
  • Frost while the rolls are still slightly warm so the icing settles into the swirls.
